“The bad guys in this movie are the lemons of the world, the cars that the world has turned their back on,” says Lasseter. The evil henchmen are an AMC Pacer and Gremlin. The new movie also features some name-brand cars, including a Corvette C6.R named Jeff Gorvette and voiced by NASCAR vet Jeff Gordon, and an Aston Martin DB9R named Nigel Gearsley.

Lewis Hamilton, as a carbon-black McLaren MP4–like coupe, is among those making celebrity cameos, along with Darrell Waltrip, Brent Musburger, and former Le Mans driver and Speed Channel F1 announcer David Hobbs, who appears as a Jaguar E-type named David Hobbscap. Star racer McQueen gets a Euro-style overhaul for international competition, including working headlights, center-lock wheel hubs, window vents, and a new wing. Shiftwell is more modern a slinky mid-engine limpet resembling a Jaguar XJ220 with an artful nose job and a shapely butt tuck. Loaded with secret weapons and hidden gadgets, McMissile is a pastiche of Aston Martin and Ferrari themes from the 1960s, a pair of jaunty tailfins the only vestige of McMissile’s original Batmobile-esque sketches. “Everybody who sees Finn McMissile says, ‘I want to own that car,’” says Schuster. That’s partly to avoid licensing issues with automakers, and partly to give them their own identity. The film designers, led by character art director Jay Schuster, basically used production cars as source material and idealized the lines to suit their own dreams. Lasseter liked the name and concept so much that he and his team blew it up into a full story line for the sequel. The main character of the film-within-a-film was an agent named Finn McMissile, who looked like a Batmobile knockoff. The plot of Cars 2 grows out of a planned but never-animated scene in Cars in which the residents of Radiator Springs watch a James Bond–like spy movie at the local drive-in. To wit: the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris is constructed of exhaust pipes, and the Latin inscription on “Big Bentley” translates to “God Salvage Crown Victoria the First.” The relentless infusion of detail continues with Cars 2, debuting on June 24, as the cast travels an international itinerary that has been ingeniously “car-ified,” as Lasseter says.

Pixar, Disney’s Emeryville, California, animation unit, did not become one of moviedom’s most reliable cash dispensers by portraying gritty real life. Cars are dismantled and cubed all the time in real life, Lasseter says, so what’s the big deal? Hey, it’s only a car, says Cars 2 director John Lasseter, after showing the press a 26-minute teaser for the new 3-D movie-following a veritable strip search of the audience for hidden cameras. Characters don’t die in animated kid flicks, right?
Within a few minutes, the audience sees gunfire, explosions, and (gasp!) a car actually dying-er, well, being smooshed into a cube, with death only implied. You know Cars 2 is going to be different from its predecessor when it opens on a dark, ominously rolling ocean.
